Is the Democratic Party Even Worth Supporting Anymore?
I just received the “2009 Priority Issues Survey” from the Democratic Party Headquarters.
The survey is divided into 7 major parts (not counting “personal information” and “additional comments” sections:
Part I: Priority Issues Ranking
- Lifting the economy out of the Bush recession
- Helping families avoid home foreclosure
- Expanding access to affordable health care
- Protecting America against terrorism
- Bringing U.S. troops home from Iraq
- Stabilizing Afghanistan
- Guaranteeing retirement security for America’s seniors
- Enacting middle-class tax relief
- Improving educational opportunities
- Raising wages and protecting jobs for American workers
- Taking swift action to stop global warming
- Restoring fiscal responsibility in government
Notice anything missing?
Parts II through VII go on in detail about:
II. Economic Recovery
III. Iraq, Afghanistan and America’s Moral Authority
IV. Health Care
V. Retirement Security and Medicare
VI. Education
VII. Energy and the Environment
VIII. Restoring Congressional Checks and Balances
That’s it. Not a section for — nor any slight mention of “Ensuring Equal Protection Under the Law for All Americans” or “Ensuing Full Civil Rights for All Americans Regardless of Sexual Orientation.”
To me, this is just the icing on the cake of what we’ve been receiving from the Democratic party on the issue that frames our lives. They’ve apparently sent this survey to all former contributors to the Democratic party. And we’re not even a tiny blip on their radar screen.
I am not a Libertarian, and I cannot support half of the Libertarian party’s positions. I’m certainly not a Republican. Maybe it’s time to consider that I’m not exactly a Democrat either.
The Democratic party has shown again and again that they care only about placating the middle-most of the middle of American society, and to hell with those of us on the “cultural edge.” They just don’t “get” that for many tens of thousands of us, there is a serious Civil Rights crisis going on.
We cannot take advantage of any improvements in any of the other areas listed on their survey if we can’t even stay in our own country!
Has anyone seriously explored other alternatives as far as organized political parties? The Greens? What else is out there?
I’ve long since diverted all of the money that I would ordinarily contribute to the Democratic party into other advocacy groups specifically championing our rights: HRC, Immigration Equality, etc. I’m going to have to leave my own damn country in less than 3 months because I can’t sponsor my partner for permanent residency — that is, because I don’t have the same basic civil rights as my brothers and sisters.
Democratic Party Leaders: Are You Listening?
